Nokkrir góðir punktar úr leikskýrslu eftir Chelsea leikinn:
The month in which Benitez hoped his team would show future title-winning credentials is precisely the wrong time for them to suffer a slump in form.
Defeat at Old Trafford, a home draw with Birmingham, and now this. Liverpool have made great strides under the Spaniard but, confidence inflated by that 10-game winning run against the Premiership’s lesser lights, they aren’t yet quite as good as some people might like to believe.
Thankfully for Liverpool, their manager does not come under that umbrella. He is acutely aware of the team’s poor record against their main rivals - since Benitez’s arrival, out of 10 Premiership games against Chelsea, Arsenal and United only one has been won - and the reasons for it.
Peter Crouch is a fine target man and played the role particularly well during the first half but, without a genuine goalscorer alongside him, his effectiveness, and Liverpool’s, is lessened considerably and the pressure on the defence increased.
Robbie Fowler, who missed yesterday’s game as he stayed on Merseyside to work on his fitness, must surely be thrown in as soon as possible, while a clinical striker has assumed top priority on Benitez’s summer shopping list.
