In Gerrard, Hamann, Alonso, Sissoko, Gonzales, Luis Garcia, Kewell, Riise, Zenden and Figo (if…if), as well as others like Nunez and Welsh, there is a bit of everything for Rafa to choose from, and no little versatility, should the manager wish to deploy at least half of them in other positions. With that array, it seems Rafa’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation will be the logical way forward.

There are super-quick players; wonderful passers and crossers; box-to-boxers; those with sublime skill on the ball; experience and potential; destructive and creative types; stoppers and scorers. Quite frankly, it puts Manchester United’s to shame: and five years ago they were the byword in midfield supremacy. Even Chelsea and Arsenal don’t have greater depth in the middle of the park.

Midfield could be the base on which Liverpool’s title challenge is based. All the better to have a fully-committed Steven Gerrard as a key part of it.

Nákvæmlega. Þótt Figo og García séu báðir aðallega hægri vængmenn, og Gonzales og Zenden geti vissulega spilað hægra megin, þá eru þetta samt allt leikmenn sem geta spilað á vinstri vængnum hjá okkur. Ef við getum klárað þetta Figo-mál á næstu dögum, verð ég að segja að stærsta vandamálið okkar undir stjórn Gérard Houllier (skortur á skapandi miðjumönnum) mun endanlega heyra sögunni til!

Hubbard fjallar líka aðeins um Luis Figo og möguleikann á komu hans til Liverpool:

“So Figo would be a significant signing, and not just because right midfield was something of a problem position for Benitez last season.

Before the term ‘galactico’ became discredited, the Portuguese fully deserved to be described as one. And while he has become surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, that has much to do with their unique politics.

Those fearful of the next Patrick Kluivert should bear in mind Figo’s fierce commitment even when out of form. The former World Player of the Year’s importance goes beyond that; he would represent the highest-profile signing anywhere in England this summer.”

Nákvæmlega! Ekki aðeins er Benítez að kaupa til að stoppa upp í götin og auka breiddina hjá okkur, ekki aðeins er hann að bæta gæðin á byrjunarliðinu og hópnum í heildina, heldur gæti hann með kaupum á Luis Figo stungið grilljónapúkunum hjá Chelsea ref fyrir rass … og það fyrir tiltölulega lítinn pening! Luis Figo yrði stærsta nafnið til að bætast við Úrvalsdeildina í Englandi í sumar, alveg sama hvaða leikmenn hin liðin myndu kaupa!
